Maurice Live Nativity
Maurice Reformed Church will be hosting their semi-annual live nativity Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10 from 5:30-8:30pm each evening. A light meal will also be served each evening– a new addition to this year’s event.
Fifty plus members of the congregation’s high school youth program dress in character to portray the nativity story, accompanied by live animals. Those who attend will ride horse drawn wagons with a narrator throughout the city of Maurice, stopping at various stations where the young people depict portions of the story.
When arriving at the church, attendants will be there to assist with parking. Once inside, census takers will assign a number for each group attending to be put on the wait list for one of the three horse drawn wagons. The church’s Family Life Center will be set up with tables and chairs to comfortably seat those who are waiting or enjoying their meal.
Originally an annual event for over twenty years, the last 10 years the live nativity has been offered semi-annually. The event brings in anywhere from 1000 to 2000 visitors throughout the two evenings. Attendance varies a great deal, depending on weather and conflicting schedules with other community and school events. While many are from the area, some travel to join the celebration, including visitors from out of state. The event is coordinated by the congregation with help from members of the community who provide horses, wagons and livestock.
Donations raised during the event are used for the high school youth program mission trip. The next mission trip will take place in June of 2024, when they will serve with Praying Pelican Missions in the Appalachian region, working with at risk youth and assisting with homeless ministry.
The live nativity does not only serve as a fund raising opportunity for the high school youth program. The performance is also a means for the youth to offer a unique form of ministry to the community. As families begin to celebrate the advent season, the youth of Maurice Reformed Church invite everyone to the live nativity and to join in the celebration of the birth of Christ.
